If you’ve walked out to your bin and noticed the roof looking puffed up, domed, or “mushroomed” compared to its normal shape, don’t ignore it. That’s not cosmetic — it’s your bin telling you there’s a pressure problem, and it can turn into real structural damage if it happens repeatedly.

Here’s what’s actually going on, and what to do about it.

The Short Answer: It’s a Pressure Imbalance

A grain bin roof is engineered to handle a certain amount of positive or negative pressure — but not both extremes, and not without a way to equalize. When air is pumped into the bin faster than it can escape the pressure has to go somewhere. Often, that “somewhere” is the roof itself, bowing upward or ballooning like a mushroom cap.

Common Causes

1. Fans pushing more air than the vents can release.  If you’re running aeration or drying fans and your roof/eave vents don’t have enough total capacity for that fan’s CFM (cubic feet per minute), pressure builds up inside the bin with nowhere to go. The roof is usually the weakest point, so it flexes first.

2. Blocked or iced-over roof vents This is the most common culprit, especially up here in the northern climate. Even a properly sized venting system can fail if the vents themselves are blocked. Snow, ice, bird nests, or plain old grain dust and debris can clog vents shut — especially in late fall and winter when you might be running fans on cold mornings without checking vent condition first.

3. Undersized venting for the bin’s fan setup Similar to the first cause, sometimes it’s not a blockage or a fluke — it’s that the roof vents installed on the bin were never sized correctly for the fan that’s on it now. If you’ve upgraded fan horsepower or added a second fan over the years without revisiting vent capacity, this mismatch can show up the first time you really push air.

4. Roof fatigue from repeated stress A roof that’s bubbled once and been pushed back into shape (or left alone) is weaker than it was. Repeated pressure events — even minor ones — can fatigue the seams and panels over time, making future bubbling more likely and more severe.

Why This Matters

A bubbled roof isn’t just an eyesore. Repeated or severe pressure events can:

  • Stress or tear roof seams and panel seals
  • Loosen fasteners, leading to leaks
  • Weaken the roof structure over time, increasing risk of a full roof failure
  • Create a safety hazard for anyone working on or near the bin

Catching it early — and figuring out why it happened — is a lot cheaper than replacing a roof.

What to Do If It Happens

  1. Shut off fans immediately if they’re running. Don’t let the pressure event continue.
  2. Don’t climb on the roof while it’s still under pressure or visibly deformed.
  3. Check your vents for ice, snow, or debris once it’s safe to do so.
  4. Inspect the roof once things have equalized — look for stressed seams, popped fasteners, or panel distortion that hasn’t fully relaxed back into place.
  5. Call in someone who knows bins to check whether your vent capacity matches your fan setup. A quick calculation now can save you a much bigger repair later. Here at Agri Systems we run the numbers to determine the right CFM’s for your specific bin.

How do you fix a damaged roof?

Most of the time, if we see a mushroomed roof it has structurally damaged or kinked most of the roof sheets.  This means the roof sheets or the entire roof needs to be replaced.  If it is just a few roof sheets and matching roof panels are still available, the sheets can often be replaced in the air.  If the whole roof needs to be replaced it turns into a fairly large project.  Depending on the damage and size of bins, sometimes the bin needs to be completely dis-assembled and a new roof installed.  Agri-Systems has a special lifting system that we can replace 48’ diameter and less roofs in the air.  We typically build the complete new roof (and sometimes a new top ring) on the ground first, then remove the old roof all in one piece, and swing the new roof up into place and fasten.  The most cost-effective time to do this is when the bin is full so we can use the grain as a working platform on the inside.  If this isn’t possible, scaffolding may need to be installed inside to perform the work. 

Preventing It Going Forward

  • Match your roof vent capacity to your fan’s CFM output — this is non-negotiable if you’ve upgraded fans.
  • Do a quick vent check before running fans in freezing or snowy conditions.
  • Avoid filling and running fans at full output simultaneously if your venting is already borderline.
  • Have your bin’s venting reviewed anytime you change fan size, add a second fan, or notice bubbling even once — it’s rarely a one-time fluke.

Bottom Line

A bubbled or mushroomed roof is your bin’s way of telling you the airflow math isn’t adding up. It’s almost always fixable, but it’s worth getting right — because a bin roof that’s already been stressed is a bin roof that’s more likely to fail when you can least afford it, like mid-harvest.
